Water Scheme Presidential Inauguration

NYIKA NATIONAL PARK, MALAWI: Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera officially inaugurated the Nyika–Vwaza Gravity-Fed Piped Water Scheme, switching on the taps of a project that will provide safe drinking water for the first time to around 18,000 people living near Nyika National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve.

The scheme sources water from the Runyina River in Nyika National Park and transports it through a 74-kilometre gravity-fed pipeline to surrounding communities. Once fully expanded, the system is expected to supply water to more than 30,000 people across the region.

Developed through partnerships between government institutions, international funders and conservation organisations including the Peace Parks Foundation, the project forms part of a broader effort to link conservation and community development across the Nyika–Vwaza landscape.

Commissioned by Peace Parks Foundation, this series documents the official launch of the scheme.
